What order should you balance pool chemicals in?
Balance in this order: total alkalinity, then pH, then calcium hardness, then cyanuric acid, then chlorine. Alkalinity anchors pH, and pH determines how effective your chlorine actually is, so sanitizer always goes last.
Total alkalinity first — raise with sodium bicarbonate, lower with muriatic acid added slowly over the return jet.
pH second — it will have moved after the alkalinity correction, so retest before dosing.
Calcium hardness third — raise with calcium chloride; the only way down is partial drain and refill.
Cyanuric acid fourth — raise with stabilizer; the only way down is dilution.
Free chlorine last — dose to 3–4 ppm once the water can hold it.
Retest 12–24 hours after any correction; a single reading right after dosing is not a result.
How much chlorine does a pool actually need per day?

Why does my pool have chlorine but still smells like chlorine?
A strong chlorine smell means combined chlorine (chloramines), not free chlorine. When total chlorine exceeds free chlorine by more than 0.5 ppm, the pool needs a breakpoint shock at roughly 10 times the combined chlorine reading.
Chloramines form when chlorine binds to ammonia and nitrogen from sweat, urine, and organic debris. They irritate eyes, smell aggressive, and sanitize poorly. Shocking at dusk and running the pump overnight clears them in a single cycle in most pools.
How do you test pool water accurately at home?
Use a drop-based reagent kit (FAS-DPD for chlorine) rather than test strips. Strips drift up to 1 ppm on chlorine and 0.4 on pH; reagent tests are accurate to about 0.2 ppm and cost roughly $30–$60 per season.

How to balance pool water chemistry
Test, correct, and verify the five core pool chemistry readings in the correct order for a North Carolina residential pool.

Step 1: Test the full panel
Collect water elbow-deep away from the returns and test free chlorine, total chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid. Write the readings down.
Step 2: Correct total alkalinity to 80–120 ppm
Add sodium bicarbonate to raise, or pour muriatic acid slowly over a running return to lower. Run the pump for 4 hours and retest before doing anything else.

Add acid in quarter-doses to lower pH, or aerate and add soda ash to raise it. Retest after 4 hours of circulation.

Step 6: Bring free chlorine to 3–4 ppm
Add liquid chlorine at dusk so UV does not burn it off, and run the pump overnight for at least 8 hours.
