Staged shock, filtration, and cleanup plan to take a green North Carolina pool back to swimmable water.
Supplies: Liquid chlorine 10–12.5%, Muriatic acid, Algaecide (polyquat), Phosphate remover if needed
Tools: Leaf rake, Pool brush, Manual vacuum, FAS-DPD test kit, Filter cleaning hose or filter cleaner
Step 1: Remove debris
Net out leaves and organic matter by hand. Do not vacuum debris through the filter — it will clog immediately.
Step 2: Test and lower pH
Test the panel and add muriatic acid to bring pH down to 7.2 so shock chlorine works at maximum strength.
Step 3: Shock hard
Add liquid chlorine to reach 10–30 ppm free chlorine depending on severity. Add at dusk and keep the pump running.
Step 4: Brush every surface
Brush walls, steps, and the floor thoroughly so chlorine reaches algae that is protected under a biofilm.
Step 5: Run the pump 24/7
Continuous filtration is what removes dead algae. Turn the pump off and the water goes cloudy grey and stalls.
Step 6: Clean the filter daily
Backwash sand or DE daily, and hose cartridges daily. A loaded filter is the number one reason recovery stalls.
Step 7: Hold chlorine until it stops dropping
Retest each evening and re-dose back to shock level. When free chlorine loses less than 1 ppm overnight, the algae is dead.
Step 8: Vacuum and rebalance
Vacuum settled debris to waste, then rebalance alkalinity, pH, calcium, and CYA, and bring chlorine back down to 3–4 ppm.
